About Cheekbone (Malar) Reduction Procedure
Excessively high and wide cheekbones are generally considered a very masculine trait. Widening of the middle third of the face can cause either a square or oval appearance to the face as a whole and distort the natural appearance of the proportions between the forehead, cheeks and jaw line. Whereas high cheekbones are often considered a positive trait in Caucasian and many Asian men, a wide and high cheek bone can cause significant facial discordance and/or masculinization of the female face, particularly in those of East Asian descent. Even in certain men, the size of the excessive cheekbone can cause facial disharmony, particularly when there is asymmetry. A wide mid face can primarily be caused by enlargement of the zygomatic bone.
Having a cheekbone reduction/shave surgery can reduce the un-natural wide appearance and size of the mid face, making it look natural and proportionate to the rest of the face. For patients that have very prominent cheekbones this technique would feminizing there features.
Dr. Joseph Broujerdi is the co-author of Facial Bone sculpting chapter in the Maxillofacial Surgery 2nd Edition textbook. Dr. Broujerdi performs his cheekbone reduction/shave surgery through an incision in the mouth. He uses special electrical hand instrument to make precise cuts and shaving in the cheekbone to fit your face. In some case Dr.Broujerdi will use small titanium plates and screws to hold the check bones together.
In our practice we use a 3D Craniofacial Cone Beam CT Scanner by Kodak which is a low dose radiation x-ray. A 3D photographic image of the patient with the 3dMD cameras are obtained and combined with the 3D CT image together. Next a 3D computer model of the skin, soft tissue and bone is obtained with the aid of the 3dMD imaging system and using the 3dMDvultus software, which allows Dr. Broujerdi to preform virtual surgery. This technology will prepare and allow the surgeon to visualize and calculate the correct movements of the jaw precisely before the actual surgery.
