Cleft Lip & Palate Mission to Guanajuato Mexico 2010
In April of 2010 about thirty medical and dental professionals including Dr. Joseph Broujerdi, traveled to Guanajuato, Mexico to perform cleft lip/palate and related surgeries for the indigenous families of the region. This Professional team came together from Mexico, United States, Spain, Guatalamala, Chile and Dominician Republic. The team lead by Dr. Jose Abel De La Pena Salcedo, director of the Instituto De Cirugia Plastica S.C. in Mexico city and Dr. Miguel Covarrubias Mata the program director of the " NUEVO AMANECER" ( New Dawn) in Guanajuato city.
The Mexican city of Guanajuato is the capital of the State of Guanajuato. Guanajuato was founded as a town in 1554 by the Spanish. The historic town and adjacent mines are a World Heritage Site. Much of the car traffic in the city uses an underground road network.
The city was originally built over the Guanajuato River, which flowed through tunnels underneath the city. However, after years of raising buildings to accommodate repeated flooding, in the mid-twentieth century, engineers built a dam and redirected the river into underground caverns. The tunnels were lit and paved with cobblestones for automobile traffic, and this underground road network carries the majority of cars driving through the city today. It is one of the most notable features of the city.
The city played a major role in the Mexican War of Independence since it is the capital of the state of Guanajuato in which Miguel Hidalgo started the independence movement.
Healing the Children, Ecuador 2001
In April of 2001 about twenty medical and dental professionals including Dr. Broujerdi headed to small town in the western province of Machala, Ecuador organized by Healing the Children foundation. For two weeks this team preformed miracles for the children of Ecuador. The team stayed at a military base, since there was a political turmoil at the time. The team preformed surgeries at the military hospital. This included cleft lip/cleft palate related surgeries and reconstructive surgery for children with burn scar contractures.
