Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Sleep Medicine Specialists say that if people want to improve their lives, they should first get a good night's sleep...EVERY NIGHT! This will reduce the risk and rates of HEART ATTACKS and STROKES. However, since so many people have undiagnosed sleep related disorders sleep apnea and its related effects have become an epidemic in United States.  There is a large task force from both medical and dental sleep specialties to diagnose, manage, treat patients of all ages who exhibit the highly dangerous effects of Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders (SRBD) (such as Snoring or Sleep Apnea) and related problems.

Sleep Apnea has a dual negative impact on individuals and their partners; both are likely to face a drop in sexual quality of life creating challenges to their intimate relationship as couples and loss of productivity at work and social life as a direct result of sleep apnea. It is a common problem among all ages and both genders, and it affects approximately 20 million American adults. The National Sleep Foundation 'Sleep in America Poll' revealed that 37% of adults report they had snored at least a few nights a week during the previous year. In fact, 27% said that they snore every night or almost every night.

Dr.Broujerdi said, "Sleep is incredibly important to everyone's health and way of life. After a good night's sleep, we wake up feeling refreshed and alert. But if our sleep is disrupted or troubled, every other part of our lives can suffer. This is especially true of our love lives. If too much carbon dioxide accumulates in our system during sleep, our bodies will remain sluggish and often unresponsive to everyday stimulation. This is true for BOTH men and women! We suggest that the partners of patients with sleeping problems insist that those partners get examined and tested for these disorders. Once diagnosed and treated, everyone wins!"

Researchers in the field of sleep apnea used magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy to compare the brain matter in patients with sleep apnea that have not been treated to patients that do not suffer from sleep apnea and patients with sleep apnea that are in treatment. This group identified significant changes in the brain matter with untreated sleep apnea patients equivalent to  traumatic brain injury patients. When the patients were examined again after treatment with continuous positive airway pressure therapy (CPAP) changes to the brain matter were no longer significant.

Simple Tips to a Good Night Sleep:

Restrict intake of caffeine (i.e. coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate) and nicotine (i.e. cigarettes and tobacco).

Do not use alcohol as a sleep aid. While it may help you fall asleep, it will severely compromise the quality of your sleep.

Avoid the use of sleeping pills and antihistamines prior to bedtime.

Avoid eating heavy meals 3 hours before bedtime.

Maintain a regular exercise routine, but complete your routine at least three hours prior to bedtime.

Utilize your bed exclusively for sleep. Avoid using your bed to do work.

If you are an insomniac, avoid napping during daytime hours.

Create a consistent enjoyable bedtime routine (such as stretching, massage, bathing).

Sleep on the side position rather than in a supine position in order to prevent turning. Sew a pocket with a tennis ball in the back of your pajamas.

If snoring disturbs an individual and or family member, consult a sleep specialist at Olympia Medical Center as the snoring may be an indicator of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)
